A Noun Project initiative in collaboration with SVA
Accessibility Iconathon
I participated in an Iconathon focused on creating new public domain icons. Working in a small team, we explored accessibility in digital spaces and the importance of diverse representation in iconography. Together, we brainstormed and illustrated icons for abstract concepts, contributing to a more inclusive visual language.

My team created 10 designs.

4 of which won the popular vote.

2 of which were vectorized and added to Iconathon's Noun Project Collection.
Alt-text
Definition: a descriptive text that conveys the meaning of an image in a digital setting.
The Thinking: A few people on the team were not familiar with alt-text. We designed a new icon based on the original graphic that appears on unloaded imagery, folding the corner back to show viewers there is actual text in the image's place. This literal interpretation should be a clearer indicator of alt-text's purpose.
Outcome: My team's design won the popular vote by a large margin and was rasterized by the host's designer.

Accessible communication
Definition: a way of sharing information that's clear, easy to understand, and available to everyone.
The Thinking: The speech bubble is a universal representation of dialogue. By adding other methods of communication within vocalized speech, it implies everything inside equally contributes to a dialogue, normalizing touch, audio, and visuals as a part of inclusive conversation.

Outcome: We won the popular vote and our design was vectorized by the host's designer.
Disability inclusion
Definition: the practice of ensuring that people with disabilities have the same access to opportunities and resources as everyone else.
The Thinking: Disability is extremely broad, encompassing physical, psychological, visible, and invisible conditions. In order to ensure we were not excluding anyone, while expressing the importance of diversity, we kept this design very abstract. One continuous line was used to imply unity in numbers.
Outcome: My team's design won the popular vote.

Digital Accessibility
Definition: the practice of designing digital products so that people with disabilities can use them.
The Thinking: We want to keep the recognizability of the original accessibility figure. We combined it with a generic idea of a chip, something that would quickly be associated with computers and tech.

Outcome: My team's design won the popular vote.
