Exploring student outlooks on health and safety in a school's model shop.

"We're probably going to die of cancer"

As someone who has spoken the above quote myself, I felt that I had to

do something about it. I always put the blame on the school and its culture for the misery in the shops. But maybe there was more behind my
prejudices. I wanted to know what I could do to improve my

environment and my community.

The values that drove this project forward...

Empowerment

Empowering the students and staff by speaking up and starting a proactive conversation.

Action

Action beyond words. Taking complaints and

trying to actually fix things.

Integrity

Staying true to my values as a designer and using my skills to create incremental change.

STAKEHOLDERS

It was important to understand how far out the effects of a chemically abundant environment reaches, and the amount of people it can affect. Putting this together and staying aware helped to focus the project, and also assissted me in making sure my research used insights from many points of view.

KEY FINDINGS

OVERWHELMING WORKLOAD

Shop staff are overwhelmed with work, and cannot reinforce policy for each student that does not follow it.

DIFFERENT VALUES

Students care more about their projects and the safety of others than they do about themselves and the shop as a whole.

HIERARCHAL BARRIERS

There's a barrier of disconnect and mistrust that separates the students and shop staff from the school administration.

LACK OF STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

There is a lack of student involvement in the betterment and maintenance of the shop.

SHOP ANGELS

Most student associations with the shops is negative. The only positive association that stood out were the "shop angels" aka, the staff.

PERPETUAL LACK OF SPACE

Lack of space in the shop is the biggest issue. However, with the increase of access comes increase of demand.

REFLECTION + BREAKDOWN

INSIGHTS

WHAT THE FUTURE SUCCESS OF THE SHOP ULTIMATELY DEPENDS ON IS TRUST.

Trust is built through understanding one another's values and knowing each other as

individuals, rather than as a parts in a bigger system. This conclusion led me to believe that as a space with different values, the shops needed a separate identity from that of the school's.
